About Doc Roberts The Flameworker
Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, I spent my days exploring the outdoors—turning over rocks, searching for lizards and snakes, and fishing for hours. My travels to countries including Mexico, Canada, Jamaica, Aruba, Ireland, China, and the Philippines exposed me to countless shapes and colors, which, combined with my mystical imagination, inspire my creativity. I embrace both traditional and innovative techniques, and my work is marked by careful attention to detail.
My glass journey began in my garage in 2007, self-taught in flameworking through trial and error while making beads. Over time, I developed my own techniques and sought guidance from experts such as Loren Stump, Milon Townsend, and Vittorio Costantini. Flameworking is as challenging as it is captivating—molten glass is unforgiving, yet its beauty draws me in. Each piece I create ranges from intricate detail to soft abstraction, a vibrant exploration of color and form.
I handcraft my work on a torch using glass rods, tubes, and metals like silver and gold, annealed in a digital kiln. My pieces are featured in galleries across Texas, including a life-size mask that has been displayed at the Rockport Center for the Arts.
